The 2017 Ram 2500 Is Updated and Even More Appealing

The 2017 Ram 2500 sees a handful of updates for this model year, including the Power Wagon gaining an upgraded interior and new exterior appearance. All models of the Ram 2500 now feature a 5-micron air filter for improved air quality within the cabin. The biggest news for the 2017 Ram 2500 is the new Off-Road package. This package gives you everything you need to go off road with confidence, including Firestone all-terrain tires, skid plates (including on the transfer case), tow hooks, a limited-slip differential, Bilstein shock absorbers, wheel flares, and hill descent control. There are also plenty of off-road decals so everyone knows you got this particular version. Best of all, this package is available on every single trim level with the exception of the Power Wagon as well as with a short or long wheelbase, diesel or gas powertrain, and Mega Cab or Crew Cab.

Get to Know the Ram 2500's History

To truly understand the history of the Ram 2500, you need to at least briefly look at the Dodge trucks from before this name arrived. It is based on the Power Wagon, which was produced after World War II by Jeep and then moved to Dodge in the mid-1950s, when it became available for the public. The Power Wagon got a V8 engine during the late 1960s but was a niche product for a while.

By 1989, the Dodge Ram was beginning its second generation and adjusted its naming scheme. This is when the Ram 2500 officially arrived, replacing the Ram 250. This is also the first year that Ram engineers gave this pickup and its heavier-duty counterpart the Ram 350/3500 a 5.88-liter Cummins diesel I6 with direct injection that stood apart from the competition. This first Cummins is the predecessor to the current Cummins turbodiesel. For the 1998 model year, the Ram 2500 got rear-opening doors in the Quad Cab. This was actually the first truck of its type available with four doors. The Quad Cab also featured integrated new front seatbelts and a completely overhauled interior. The suspension was updated in 2000, and a new Cummins turbodiesel arrived in 2001 with 505 pound-feet.

The Ram 2500 got a complete redesign for 2001 with the Power Wagon being introduced in 2004 and the Mega Cab in 2006. Diesel output increased again in 2007, and the 2010 Ram 2500 got an all-new design closely resembling the current model.
